Why Community isn’t JUST for Women

Why Community isn’t JUST for Women

Women have always been portrayed as “social creatures.” Sharing life’s victories, struggles, and encouragement is so normalized that it has been woven into the very definition of what it means to be a “woman” in society. Many will testify that having a community of other women to walk alongside has made a tremendous impact on their mental health and personal growth. Finding that community to share with can be life changing, but is it just for women?

In society, men are often told to act as silent, stoic leaders, that need to handle things on their own. As a result, many men report feeling guilty, ashamed, and inadequate against the expectations that have been set for them.

Let’s take a look at how surrounding yourself with a community can help!

– Releases Bottled Up Emotions

  • One struggle that many people experience is the belief  that they  can’t openly express how they are feeling. Emotions can’t be held in forever, no matter who you are. They come out eventually, and usually at the expense of those closest to us. Having a community of people you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts with can prevent the urge to keep negative feelings bottled up, and reduce stress.

– Knowing You Aren’t Alone

  • Another advantage of community is being able to hear from others who struggle with similar things and share those experiences. It can be overwhelming feeling like you’re the only one struggling. Hearing how other people cope with an issue can provide tips and insight into better ways to manage your own struggles. And better yet, your experiences could help others!

– Insight on Other Experiences

  • Everyone’s journey is different- and that’s a good thing! Building a community of people who share similar experiences with you definitely has benefits, but forming relationships with people whose lives look different than your own is just as important! Taking the time to listen to the experiences of others can change your perspective of your own situation.

Being human means sometimes experiencing negative emotions- no one is exempt! People are not meant to live life in isolation. It can be exhausting carrying your burdens alone. That’s why living in community with others is so important! Leaving those emotions and complicated feelings bottled up inside will only hurt you, and likely those around you. Find those people who you can trust and share with! If you need help getting started, therapy could be a great first step in sharing your experiences and emotions.
